When the countdown reaches zero and the first firework bursts into the night sky, the audience sees the beginning of a spectacular performance.
What they don’t see are the hours, days and often weeks of planning that made those first few seconds possible.
At Reaction Fireworks, we’ve been designing and delivering professional firework displays since 1987. Whether it’s an intimate wedding, a major public celebration or a New Year’s Eve spectacular, every display follows a carefully planned journey long before the audience arrives.
Here’s what really happens behind the scenes before the countdown begins.
Step 1 – Understanding the Event
Every display starts with a conversation.
We want to understand:
- What the event is.
- Who the audience will be.
- The venue.
- The available budget.
- The client’s vision.
No two enquiries are ever identical, which is why every display begins with understanding what makes that particular event special.
Step 2 – Designing the Display
Once we understand the event, we begin designing the display itself.
This involves choosing:
- Colours.
- Effects.
- Pacing.
- Display duration.
- The style of the finale.
Every decision is made to suit the venue, the audience and the occasion.
Step 3 – Digital Choreography
Before a single firework leaves our premises, the display is designed virtually using Finale 3D.
This allows us to preview the performance, refine the choreography and ensure the display flows naturally from beginning to end.
If music is involved, every cue is synchronised to the soundtrack before programming begins.
Step 4 – Programming the Display
Once the choreography has been finalised, every firing cue is programmed into our COBRA electronic firing system.
This process determines:
- Exactly when each firework will be launched.
- Which ignition module it is connected to.
- The order of every sequence.
- The precise timing of the finale.
By this stage, the display already exists digitally.
Step 5 – Preparing the Fireworks
Before leaving for site, the fireworks are carefully organised for the display.
This includes:
- Preparing the firing equipment.
- Checking components.
- Organising the display sequence.
- Preparing transport.
Organisation at this stage helps ensure an efficient installation once the team arrives on site.
Step 6 – Arrival at the Venue
On the day of the display, our team usually arrives several hours before firing time.
This allows plenty of time for:
- Setting up the firing area.
- Positioning the fireworks.
- Installing electronic firing equipment.
- Protecting equipment from the weather where necessary.
Most of the audience has no idea this work is taking place while they’re enjoying the rest of the event.
Step 7 – Testing Everything
Before the display is ready, every system is carefully checked.
This includes confirming:
- The firing system is functioning correctly.
- The programmed cues are ready.
- Communications are working.
- Weather conditions remain suitable.
No professional display begins without these final checks.
Step 8 – Waiting for the Right Moment
One of the least understood parts of a professional display is the waiting.
Once everything is ready, there may be very little left to do except monitor conditions and wait for the agreed firing time.
That quiet period often represents the moment when weeks of preparation are complete.
Step 9 – The Countdown
When the organiser confirms everything is ready, the countdown begins.
For the audience, it’s the start of the display.
For us, it’s the moment where preparation becomes performance.
Every firing cue, every sequence and every finale has already been planned.
Now it’s time for the choreography to come to life.
Step 10 – After the Applause
Even when the audience heads home, our work isn’t finished.
Professional displays conclude with:
- Making the firing area safe.
- Removing equipment.
- Clearing the site.
- Final checks.
Only once everything has been completed does the event truly come to an end.
The Part Nobody Sees
Most people experience a professional firework display for ten or fifteen unforgettable minutes.
Our team experiences the entire journey—from the very first enquiry through weeks of planning, careful preparation, installation, programming, firing and finally leaving an empty site behind.
That’s why, after nearly four decades, we still believe that the most important part of every display happens long before the first firework reaches the sky.
Reaction Fireworks Expert Tip
If you’ve booked a professional firework display, don’t worry if you don’t see much activity before the event. The quietest moments often mean everything is running exactly as planned. Most of the real work has already been completed behind the scenes.
From Our Experience
We’ve often smiled when guests arrive and ask, “Have you only just got here?” In reality, we’ve usually been on site for several hours, carefully preparing every detail. The best compliment we can receive is when the display appears effortless, because that usually means all the planning has worked exactly as intended.
Myth vs Reality
Myth: Professional fireworks are mostly about what happens during the display.
Reality: The display itself is only the visible part of the process. The planning, design, programming, preparation and testing that take place beforehand are what make a professional performance possible.
Fireworks Fact
A ten-minute professional display may represent dozens of hours of combined planning, preparation and programming before the audience even begins the countdown. That’s one reason why every successful display is the result of teamwork as much as technology.
Did You Know?
When the first firework is launched, the operator usually already knows exactly how the final firework will end several minutes later. Every cue has been programmed in advance, allowing the entire performance to unfold exactly as it was designed.
