When you watch a truly spectacular firework display, it often feels as though the fireworks have a rhythm of their own. Colours flow naturally, bursts appear at exactly the right moment and the finale builds to an unforgettable climax.
That isn’t luck.
It’s choreography.
Professional firework choreography is the art of combining fireworks, timing, colour, height and pacing into a single performance. Like an orchestra performing a piece of music, every firework has its own role to play.
At Reaction Fireworks, every display is individually choreographed before it ever reaches the venue. It’s one of the reasons our displays feel polished, exciting and memorable rather than simply a series of fireworks being fired into the sky.
Every Display Begins with a Blank Screen
There isn’t a standard programme that we simply reuse for every event.
Each display starts from scratch.
Before selecting any fireworks, we consider:
- The occasion.
- The venue.
- The audience.
- The available budget.
- Whether the display will be fired to music.
- The overall atmosphere we want to create.
Only then do we begin designing the choreography.
Designing the Performance
Professional choreography is about much more than deciding which firework goes next.
We carefully balance:
- Colour.
- Height.
- Effect type.
- Burst size.
- Firing speed.
- Visual rhythm.
The objective is to create constant variety while allowing the audience time to appreciate each sequence before moving on to the next.
Building the Display
Most professional displays follow a carefully planned structure.
This often includes:
- An attention-grabbing opening.
- Gradual increases in intensity.
- Alternating fast and slow sequences.
- Changes in colour and effect style.
- One or more “wow” moments.
- A spectacular finale.
This structure keeps the audience engaged throughout the performance.
Using Finale 3D
At Reaction Fireworks, displays are designed using Finale 3D, one of the world’s leading professional fireworks design platforms.
Before a single firework is packed for transport, we can:
- Build the complete display virtually.
- Preview timing.
- Adjust colours.
- Refine the pacing.
- Synchronise displays to music.
- Perfect the finale.
This allows us to identify improvements long before the display reaches the venue.
Programming Every Cue
Once the choreography has been finalised, every individual firing cue is programmed into our COBRA electronic firing system.
Each firework receives its own precise firing time.
During the display, the electronic firing system reproduces the choreography exactly as it was designed.
This level of accuracy would be impossible to achieve consistently by manually lighting fireworks.
Knowing When Not to Fire
One of the biggest lessons experienced display designers learn is that constant action doesn’t always create the best display.
Sometimes a single beautiful shell, hanging in the night sky for several seconds, creates far more impact than firing dozens of fireworks at once.
Professional choreography is about restraint as much as excitement.
The pauses are just as important as the explosions.
The Finale
The ending is often what people remember most.
That’s why we spend so much time designing finales that feel powerful without becoming chaotic.
A successful finale should:
- Increase naturally in intensity.
- Use complementary colours.
- Fill the sky.
- End decisively.
When guests applaud before the smoke has even cleared, that’s usually a sign the choreography has done its job.
Why Experience Still Matters
Software is an incredibly powerful design tool, but it doesn’t replace experience.
Understanding how different fireworks behave, how audiences react and how to create emotion through choreography comes from designing and delivering displays year after year.
Founded in 1987, Reaction Fireworks has choreographed displays for everything from intimate wedding celebrations to major public events, combining creativity, technology and experience to produce performances that are remembered long after the final firework has faded from the sky.
From Our Experience
One of the most rewarding moments is hearing the audience applaud halfway through a display because a particular sequence has genuinely surprised them. Those moments are never accidental. They happen because the display has been carefully choreographed to create contrast, build anticipation and deliver visual impact exactly when it’s needed.
Myth vs Reality
Myth: Professional firework displays are simply random fireworks fired one after another.
Reality: Every professionally designed display is carefully choreographed. Colour, timing, effect selection, pacing and the finale are all planned in advance to create a complete performance rather than a collection of individual fireworks.
Fireworks Fact
Some large musical firework displays contain well over 1,000 individually programmed firing cues. Each cue is timed to a fraction of a second, allowing fireworks to burst in perfect harmony with the music and with one another.
