Every professional firework display begins long before the first firework is loaded into a firing tube. In fact, the design process is one of the most important parts of creating a spectacular display.
At Reaction Fireworks, every display is individually designed to suit the venue, audience and occasion. Whether we’re creating a romantic wedding display, a large public Bonfire Night celebration or a major city event, our objective is always the same – to create a display that tells a story, builds excitement and leaves a lasting impression.
There is far more involved than simply selecting fireworks from a catalogue.
It Starts with Your Event
The first stage is understanding exactly what you want to achieve.
We consider:
- The type of event.
- The venue.
- The expected audience size.
- Your available budget.
- Whether the display will be choreographed to music.
- Any venue restrictions.
- The time of year.
Every one of these factors influences the final display design.
Designing for the Venue
No two venues are ever the same.
A display designed for a country estate would look very different from one designed for a city centre rooftop, a hotel or a sports stadium.
Before selecting any fireworks, we assess:
- The available firing area.
- Spectator viewing locations.
- Nearby buildings.
- Trees and other obstructions.
- Ground conditions.
- Safety distances.
- The surrounding landscape.
This allows us to choose fireworks that will look their best at that particular venue.
Choosing the Right Fireworks
Professional displays use a wide variety of effects to create contrast and excitement throughout the performance.
A typical display may include:
- Aerial shells.
- Comets.
- Mines.
- Cakes.
- Roman candles.
- Waterfalls.
- Ground-based pyrotechnics.
- Specialist finale sequences.
Each effect is chosen for a specific reason and positioned carefully within the overall display.
Building the Display
A professional display isn’t random.
Like a piece of music, it has structure.
Most displays follow a natural progression:
- An attention-grabbing opening.
- A gradual introduction of colours and effects.
- Changes in pace and intensity.
- Larger, more dramatic sequences.
- A powerful finale.
This structure keeps the audience engaged from beginning to end.
Programming the Display
Once the design has been finalised, every individual firing cue is programmed into a professional electronic firing system.
This allows fireworks to be launched with exceptional accuracy.
If the display is choreographed to music, every cue is carefully timed to complement the soundtrack.
Programming can take many hours depending on the size and complexity of the display.
Attention to Detail
One of the biggest differences between an experienced display designer and an inexperienced one is attention to detail.
We think about things such as:
- How colours flow from one sequence to the next.
- How quickly the display develops.
- When to introduce larger fireworks.
- When to allow the audience a brief pause before building again.
- How to create a memorable finale.
These are the details that transform a good display into an exceptional one.
Designed by Experience
Having designed displays for weddings, local authorities, sporting events, festivals, hotels and nationally recognised public celebrations, we’ve learnt that every audience is different.
Some events demand elegance and emotion.
Others require energy, excitement and constant action.
Our role is to understand the occasion and design a display that perfectly reflects it.
Every Display Is Unique
One of the questions we’re occasionally asked is whether we simply repeat the same display for every client.
The answer is no.
Every Reaction Fireworks display is individually designed around the event itself.
Even if two weddings have the same budget, they’ll almost certainly have different venues, different audiences and different objectives. Those differences are reflected in the final design.
That’s one of the reasons so many of our clients return to us year after year.
Behind the Scenes
A professional firework display lasting just eight minutes may contain several hundred individual firing cues. Before the event, every cue is carefully planned and programmed so that the fireworks appear exactly when the designer intended. Although the audience only sees a few minutes of fireworks, the design and programming process can take many hours to complete.
