One of the biggest misconceptions about professional fireworks is that every display uses the same products, just in different quantities.

In reality, selecting the fireworks is one of the most important parts of the design process.

Every shell, mine, comet and multi-shot effect is chosen for a specific reason. The aim isn’t simply to fill the sky, but to create a display with rhythm, variety and emotion that suits the venue, the audience and the occasion.

At Reaction Fireworks, we’ve been designing bespoke displays since 1987. Choosing the right fireworks is as much an art as it is a technical process, and it’s one of the reasons no two of our displays are ever exactly the same.

It Always Starts with the Event

Before selecting a single firework, we first consider the event itself.

Questions we ask include:

  • What is being celebrated?
  • Who will be watching?
  • What type of venue is it?
  • How long should the display last?
  • What atmosphere are we trying to create?

The answers shape every design decision that follows.

Matching the Venue

The venue plays a major role in determining which fireworks will create the greatest impact.

For example:

  • A lakeside venue may benefit from reflections on the water.
  • A historic building might suit elegant gold effects.
  • A city centre display may require carefully planned viewing angles.
  • A large public event may call for higher aerial effects visible across a wider area.

The fireworks should always complement the venue rather than compete with it.

Building Variety

Professional display designers avoid repetition.

Instead, they create contrast by combining different:

  • Colours.
  • Heights.
  • Burst patterns.
  • Effect durations.
  • Textures.
  • Firing speeds.

This constant variation keeps audiences engaged throughout the display.

Thinking Beyond Individual Fireworks

One firework on its own may look impressive.

Professional designers think about how every effect works with the one before it and the one after it.

It’s similar to composing music.

Individual notes matter—but it’s the way they’re arranged that creates something memorable.

Choosing the Right Colours

Colour selection is about much more than personal preference.

Different colour combinations create different moods.

For example:

  • Gold often creates elegance.
  • Silver brings energy and sparkle.
  • Deep blues can feel dramatic.
  • Bright reds create excitement.
  • Mixed colour sequences add contrast and variety.

The colours chosen should reflect the character of the event.

Designing the Finale

The finale isn’t simply whatever fireworks remain at the end.

From the very beginning, we select effects that will work together to create a powerful conclusion.

Those fireworks are reserved specifically for the final sequence, allowing the display to build naturally towards its climax.

Testing the Design Digitally

Once the fireworks have been selected, the complete display is designed using Finale 3D.

This allows us to preview how every effect works together before programming the display into our COBRA electronic firing system.

Sometimes small adjustments at this stage make a significant difference to the overall performance.

Experience Shapes Every Choice

Software is an incredible tool, but it doesn’t replace experience.

Knowing which fireworks work beautifully together, how different effects appear from various viewing distances and when to introduce contrast comes from years of designing real displays for real audiences.

After nearly four decades, that’s still one of the parts of the job we enjoy most.

Reaction Fireworks Expert Tip

If you’re comparing professional displays, don’t ask how many fireworks are included. Ask how the display has been designed. A carefully selected combination of effects will usually create a far stronger performance than simply using a larger quantity of fireworks.

From Our Experience

We’ve occasionally removed fireworks from a display during the design process because they didn’t contribute to the overall performance. That might sound unusual, but great choreography is about choosing the right effects—not simply using as many as possible. Sometimes less really is more.

Myth vs Reality

Myth: Professional displays are created by using the biggest fireworks available.

Reality: Professional display design is about selecting the right fireworks for the occasion. Variety, pacing, colour and choreography all play a far greater role than simply choosing the largest effects.

Fireworks Fact

Professional display designers often work with hundreds of different firework effects, each offering its own colour, shape, duration and visual style. Choosing the right combination is one of the most creative parts of designing a display.

Did You Know?

Two professional displays using exactly the same budget can look completely different. That’s because the designer’s choice of effects, colours and choreography has a huge influence on how the audience experiences the performance.
