One of the questions we’re most frequently asked after a display is, “How do you get the fireworks to explode at exactly the right time?”

Whether it’s a breathtaking musical performance or a perfectly timed Bonfire Night finale, the answer is surprisingly simple.

Professional displays don’t rely on luck.

They rely on planning, technology and experience.

Every firework is carefully programmed before the display takes place, allowing hundreds—or even thousands—of individual firing cues to work together as one seamless performance.

Since 1987, Reaction Fireworks has embraced advances in professional firing technology while remaining true to one principle: technology should support great display design, not replace it.

Every Firework Has Its Own Job

When people watch a display, they often see a continuous sequence of fireworks.

Behind the scenes, every individual firework has already been assigned:

  • A precise firing location.
  • An individual cue number.
  • An exact firing time.
  • A specific purpose within the choreography.

Nothing happens by chance.

Every cue contributes to the overall performance.

Design Comes First

Long before the display reaches the venue, it has already been created virtually.

At Reaction Fireworks, we use Finale 3D to design every sequence.

This allows us to:

  • Preview the complete display.
  • Balance colours.
  • Adjust the pacing.
  • Refine the choreography.
  • Perfect the finale.

By the time the fireworks are transported to site, the entire performance has already been carefully planned.

Programming the Display

Once the choreography has been finalised, the display is programmed into our COBRA electronic firing system.

Every cue is allocated an exact firing time.

This allows the system to reproduce the display exactly as it was designed, ensuring remarkable accuracy throughout the performance.

It’s the same technology used by many of the world’s leading professional display companies.

Accuracy Measured in Fractions of a Second

Professional electronic firing systems are capable of extremely accurate timing.

That precision allows us to:

  • Fire multiple effects simultaneously.
  • Create complex aerial patterns.
  • Synchronise fireworks with music.
  • Build dramatic finales.
  • Maintain consistent pacing throughout the display.

Without electronic firing, many of these effects would simply not be possible.

What About Musical Displays?

Musical choreography demands an even greater level of precision.

Every firework must be launched at exactly the right moment so that it reaches its full effect in time with the soundtrack.

Because aerial fireworks take time to travel into the sky before bursting, experienced display designers carefully calculate when each cue should be fired.

It’s a fascinating combination of creativity, mathematics and experience.

Technology Doesn’t Replace Experience

People sometimes assume the computer does all the work.

It doesn’t.

The software simply reproduces the decisions already made by the display designer.

Knowing:

  • Which effects work together.
  • How audiences react.
  • How colours flow.
  • When to slow the pace.
  • How to build a memorable finale.

Those are skills developed through years of practical experience rather than by pressing a button.

Consistency Every Time

One of the greatest advantages of electronic firing is consistency.

Once a display has been carefully designed and programmed, it can be delivered with exceptional accuracy.

That gives clients confidence that the performance they’ve approved during the planning stage is the performance their guests will enjoy on the night.

The Audience Sees Magic

To the audience, everything appears effortless.

Colours flow naturally.

Bursts appear at exactly the right moment.

The finale builds perfectly.

Behind that apparent simplicity lies careful planning, specialist technology and decades of professional experience.

That’s why synchronisation isn’t just about computers.

It’s about people who know how to turn technology into unforgettable moments.

From Our Experience

One of the greatest compliments we receive is when someone asks whether we were “reacting” to the music as the display progressed. In reality, every cue had been programmed long before the audience arrived. When the choreography feels completely natural, we’ve done our job properly.

Myth vs Reality

Myth: Professional operators press a button and the computer does everything.

Reality: The computer simply follows the programme created by the display designer. Every colour change, every pause, every burst and every finale sequence has already been carefully planned by experienced professionals.

Fireworks Fact

A large professional firework display can contain well over 1,500 individual firing cues. Each one is assigned its own precise firing time, allowing complex aerial choreography that would be impossible to achieve consistently by hand.
