One of the questions we’re regularly asked is, “How long does it actually take to set up a professional firework display?”
The answer depends on the size of the display, the venue and the complexity of the choreography, but one thing is always true:
The setup takes far longer than most people imagine.
While the audience may enjoy ten or fifteen minutes of spectacular fireworks, our team will often spend several hours on site preparing every aspect of the display before the countdown even begins.
At Reaction Fireworks, we’ve been delivering professional displays since 1987, and careful preparation has always been one of the biggest contributors to a successful event.
No Two Displays Are the Same
Every event is different.
Setting up a wedding display at a country house hotel requires a different approach from preparing a large public display in a town centre.
The time required depends on factors such as:
- The size of the display.
- The number of firing positions.
- The complexity of the choreography.
- The venue layout.
- Site access.
- Weather conditions.
Every display is planned individually rather than working to a fixed timetable.
Arriving Well Before the Audience
Professional display teams almost always arrive long before guests begin gathering.
This allows plenty of time to:
- Unload equipment.
- Prepare the firing area.
- Position the fireworks.
- Install electronic firing equipment.
- Carry out final checks.
By the time guests arrive, much of the work has already been completed.
Preparation Is Everything
Setting up a display isn’t simply a matter of placing fireworks on the ground.
Every firework must be positioned as it was designed during the choreography stage.
This involves:
- Organising the firing sequence.
- Connecting the electronic firing system.
- Checking each firing position.
- Protecting equipment where necessary.
Attention to detail at this stage helps ensure everything runs smoothly later.
Programming Meets Reality
Before arriving on site, the display has already been designed using Finale 3D and programmed into our COBRA electronic firing system.
The installation process brings that digital design into the real world.
Every module, cue and firing position must match the programmed choreography precisely.
Weather Never Takes a Day Off
Throughout the setup process, weather conditions continue to be monitored.
Our team pays close attention to:
- Wind direction.
- Wind speed.
- Rain.
- Visibility.
- Changes in the forecast.
Conditions can change throughout the day, so professional display teams remain attentive right up until firing time.
Final Testing
Before the audience hears the countdown, a series of final checks is carried out.
This includes confirming:
- The firing system is operating correctly.
- The programmed sequences are ready.
- Communications are working.
- The display area is prepared.
Only once these checks have been completed is the display considered ready.
Sometimes the Hardest Part Is Waiting
Once everything has been prepared, there is often a period where very little appears to be happening.
Guests may assume the team is simply waiting.
In reality, we’re continuing to monitor conditions, remain in communication with the event organiser and prepare for the agreed firing time.
Professional displays rely on patience as much as preparation.
Every Minute Matters
Although the audience only experiences the display itself, the setup forms an essential part of the overall performance.
Every cable connected, every cue checked and every final inspection contributes to a display that appears effortless when the first firework bursts overhead.
That’s exactly how it should be.
Reaction Fireworks Expert Tip
If you see the firework team arriving hours before your event, don’t worry that something is taking longer than expected. Professional displays are deliberately set up well in advance so there’s plenty of time for careful preparation, testing and final checks before the audience gathers.
From Our Experience
Some of our longest setup days have actually resulted in the shortest displays. That’s because the complexity of the venue or the choreography—not simply the display duration—often determines how much preparation is required. Guests usually see ten spectacular minutes; we remember the many hours that made those ten minutes possible.
Myth vs Reality
Myth: Setting up a professional firework display only takes a few minutes.
Reality: Professional displays often require several hours of careful preparation before firing begins. Installation, programming checks, equipment setup and weather monitoring all take place long before the audience starts the countdown.
Fireworks Fact
On larger public events, the setup team may arrive before sunrise if the display involves multiple firing locations or complex logistics. Careful preparation ensures there is ample time to complete every stage of the installation without rushing.
Did You Know?
During setup, professional display teams often work from detailed firing plans showing the exact location of every firework and electronic firing cue. This ensures the real-world installation matches the choreography created during the design stage.
