One of the questions we’re often asked is, “How long does it take to set everything up?” Many people imagine that a professional firework display can be prepared in an hour or two, but the reality is very different.

The display itself may only last between five and fifteen minutes, but preparing it safely and professionally can take many hours. Every firework must be positioned, secured, connected, checked and tested before the display is ready to fire.

At Reaction Fireworks, we never rush the setup process. Since 1987, we’ve built our reputation on careful preparation, because we know that a successful display begins long before the audience arrives.

Every Display Is Different

There isn’t a standard setup time that applies to every event.

The time required depends on a number of factors, including:

  • The size of the display.
  • The number of firing positions.
  • The complexity of the choreography.
  • The venue layout.
  • Access to the firing site.
  • Ground conditions.
  • Weather conditions.

A small wedding display naturally takes less time to prepare than a major public event involving several firing locations.

What Happens During Setup?

Preparing a professional firework display involves far more than unloading fireworks from a vehicle.

Typical setup tasks include:

  • Marking out the firing area.
  • Positioning launch equipment.
  • Installing and securing fireworks.
  • Connecting electrical igniters.
  • Installing electronic firing modules.
  • Checking safety distances.
  • Confirming communication systems.
  • Testing every firing circuit.

Each stage is completed methodically before moving on to the next.

Electronic Testing

One advantage of using professional electronic firing systems is that every firing circuit can be tested before the display begins.

Using our COBRA electronic firing system, we check that every cue is correctly connected and ready to fire.

This testing process provides confidence that the display will perform exactly as designed.

Planning Before Arrival

Much of the work has already been completed before our team even arrives on site.

Displays are designed using Finale 3D, where every firework is allocated its own firing position and cue number.

This planning allows our operators to work efficiently during setup while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy.

Safety Checks

Before the display begins, a series of final safety checks are carried out.

These include confirming:

  • The firing area remains secure.
  • Weather conditions are suitable.
  • Spectator viewing areas are clear.
  • Communication between team members is working.
  • All equipment is operating correctly.

Only when these checks have been completed will the display be declared ready to fire.

What Happens After the Display?

Once the fireworks have finished, our work isn’t over.

The team will:

  • Inspect the firing area.
  • Check for any unfired fireworks.
  • Disconnect electronic equipment.
  • Dismantle the firing system.
  • Remove equipment and associated materials.
  • Leave the site safe and tidy.

This post-display inspection is an important part of every professional display.

Why We Never Rush

One of the advantages of booking an experienced professional company is knowing that sufficient time has been allowed to complete every stage properly.

Careful preparation not only improves safety but also helps ensure the display performs exactly as intended.

It’s one of the reasons clients trust us to deliver displays for weddings, local authorities, prestigious venues and major public events year after year.

Preparation Creates Perfection

When your guests watch the display, they see only a few unforgettable minutes in the night sky.

Behind those few minutes are hours of preparation, years of experience and meticulous attention to detail.

That’s what transforms a collection of fireworks into a professionally choreographed display.

Behind the Scenes

For a large public display, our team often arrives many hours before the audience. By the time spectators begin to gather, the fireworks are already installed, individually wired, electronically tested and ready to perform. The audience sees the excitement of the display, but very little of the careful preparation that makes it possible.

Myth vs Reality

Myth: Professional firework displays are set up just before they begin.

Reality: Most professional displays require several hours of careful preparation. Every firework is individually positioned, connected, tested and checked before the first cue is fired. Rushing the setup process is never an option.

Fireworks Fact

A large professional display may involve hundreds of electrical igniters and firing circuits. Every one is tested before the display begins to confirm it is communicating correctly with the electronic firing system, helping ensure reliable and accurate performance on the night.
