One of the questions we’re often asked is, “How far in advance should I book my firework display?” The simple answer is: the earlier, the better.
Popular dates can become fully booked many months in advance, particularly Saturdays during the wedding season, Bonfire Night weekend, New Year’s Eve and major public event dates. Booking early not only guarantees availability but also gives plenty of time to plan every aspect of your display properly.
At Reaction Fireworks, we’ve been designing professional displays for nearly 40 years, and we’ve learnt that the best displays are never rushed. Good planning allows us to understand your venue, your audience and exactly what you want to achieve.
When Should I Book a Wedding Firework Display?
For weddings, we recommend booking as soon as your venue has been confirmed.
Many couples book their fireworks between 6 and 18 months before their wedding, particularly if their wedding falls on a Saturday during the spring or summer.
Booking early means:
- Your preferred date is secured.
- We can liaise with your venue well in advance.
- There is plenty of time to discuss personalised effects or musical choreography.
- You have one less thing to worry about as your wedding approaches.
Public Events and Bonfire Displays
Large public displays require significantly more planning than private celebrations.
Many councils, event organisers and community groups book their displays several months in advance, allowing time for:
- Site visits.
- Risk assessments.
- Safety planning.
- Licensing where required.
- Safety Advisory Group (SAG) meetings.
- Traffic management planning.
For major public events, it’s not unusual for planning to begin six to twelve months before the event itself.
Can I Book at Short Notice?
Yes.
Although we always recommend booking early, we understand that events don’t always go to plan.
We’ve successfully delivered displays arranged at relatively short notice, provided we have availability and there is sufficient time to complete the necessary planning.
If your event is only a few weeks away, it’s still worth getting in touch. We’ll always do our best to accommodate you.
Why Does Planning Take Time?
Many people only see the finished display, but there’s a great deal of preparation that happens behind the scenes.
Depending on the event, planning may include:
- Visiting the venue.
- Assessing spectator areas.
- Determining firing locations.
- Preparing display designs.
- Programming electronic firing systems.
- Producing risk assessments and method statements.
- Liaising with venues and event organisers.
Allowing plenty of time ensures every aspect of the display can be planned carefully.
Some Dates Book Up Very Quickly
Certain dates are always in exceptionally high demand.
These include:
- Bonfire Night weekend.
- New Year’s Eve.
- Bank Holiday weekends.
- Summer Saturdays.
- Popular wedding dates.
Once these dates are fully booked, it may not be possible to accommodate additional displays, regardless of budget.
Booking Early Doesn’t Mean Everything Has to Be Finalised
Many clients worry that they need every detail confirmed before making a booking.
In reality, most of the finer details can be discussed much closer to the event.
You may decide later to:
- Increase your budget.
- Add personalised effects.
- Synchronise the display to music.
- Adjust the display time.
- Upgrade the finale.
Securing your date simply gives you the flexibility to make those decisions later.

Expert Tip
If you’re booking a wedding venue, ask about fireworks before signing your contract. Most venues are happy to accommodate professional displays, but some have specific conditions relating to firing locations, finish times or nearby livestock. Confirming these details early helps avoid surprises later and gives you the greatest choice when designing your display.
